Grr

After the WT meeting we had today, i was thinking about what was mentioned.

Pastor mentioned about liking "new blood" in the team because they are all so eager to "get it right the first few times".
Unfortunately, not all "new blood" are like that.
There are some who just don't bother even listening to songs before coming for practice!
And yes, i AM surprised. Horrified, even.
Why join the WT then?
So that people can recognise you?
So that people can see how good you are?
OH COME ON.

And then there was the point about murmuring and grumbling.
Yes, all of us have grumbled before.
Especially those who have been serving for over 10 years.
By the way, I REALLY respect all of those.
They've been serving for so long and they're STILL serving.
It's GREAT. :)

Anyway,
People always comment that i'm a perfectionist, tries to fix things a lot, picky even..
And time and time again the WT is reminded not to be too technical.
But what's wrong about wanting the best for God?
Especially if you CAN do it but you're not giving your best.
Danny and Ps Julie mentioned that the spirit of excellence IS a good thing.
If you're giving a performance (not that i'm saying that worship is a performance) you'd practice again and again to make sure that nothing goes wrong.
So when you're worshipping GOD, why shouldn't we give our VERY BEST?
But yes, i agree that when all you focus on is technique, you give little room for the spirit to flow..
But then again, HOW to flow when the technique isn't there?
How to flow when we don't know our chords?
How to flow when we're not LISTENING to each other? When we're not looking at the WL?
When we don't bother even to pray before coming for practices and before service?
That's why i complain, because i think and i KNOW things can be better.
If only we are willing to work at it.
I say WE because i have room for a LOT of improvement too. :D

Another thing that bugs me.
Many people come for worship practices unprepared..they arrive and only then they start learning the new song the WL wants to introduce that week, learn up solos, practice their chords...
It's not just the WL's job to make preparations for worship that week!
The musicians and backups are supposed to memorise their lyrics, learn up their parts, know their chords and solos and whatever else.
Practice is the time for the team to worship. And try out new things.
By right, during practice, we should know our chords and lyrics so well that we don't have to look at them anymore.
Then we should be able to just worship and flow with the spirit better.

And if you don't want to practice at home before coming for worship practices, please don't practice your John Mayer stuff or come up with drum solos or whatever else?
Because even if you can play exactly how John Mayer plays or even if you have the best drum solo, if you can't be bothered to spend as many hours to be as good during worship and to give your best to God, WHAT'S THE POINT?
Who gave you the talent anyway?

Second half another day. :)

I agree to that... quite true. If you're gonna stress out in exams and everything else to do your best do the same thing for God too laa right :)

Wowowow! Esther Lim writes! Hmm..good writing there. Strongly agree with your sentiments. I've always have a strong opinion that we have to put pride on the 'shelf' if we want to serve on the Worship Team. Because if it comes to a point where we fill minds about 'looking good' or 'being cool' on the stage for self-satisfaction, my as well get off the stage because we will be using the gifts (which he entrusted upon us) for all the wrong reasons.

About practice and perfection, I think being a perfectionist is a good thing. I agree with you that without the technique (which you gain from practice), you might be limited to flow, etc. To add on, if we have a willing heart, and we give our best to practice, etc, God can work wonders, He will increase your skills because He knows our intentions (passionate to serve Him, not to show of~lar, Haha.).

Keep writing! Rock on!
